    An introductory course for graduate students that identifies the organisms and areas in ecology and evolutionary ecology that link best to genomics and specifically functional genomics, the branch of genomics that determines the biological function of genes and their products.   • ED 520 - Single Subject Research Methodology

    This course is designed to provide the learner with readings, discussions, and other learning experiences in the area of single subject research methodology. The intent of the course is to provide learners from a variety of disciplines (e.g., education, psychology, sociology, health sciences) with an opportunity to acquire competencies related to planning, implementing, and analyzing the effectiveness of individualized interventions or therapies (e.g, academic tutoring, behavior modification, mental health treatment regiments, physical rehabilitation). Single subject is not specific to any discipline or age level. Thus, the methodology is often used in applied fields of psychology, education, human behavior and health/medicine. In this course, a general method is described for conducting and interpreting research where individuals serve as their own control, rather than using another individual/group.

    The course develops teacher expertise in administering reading assessments that will drive instruction needed to meet the needs of diverse learners in grades 6-12.  The course emphasizes theoretical and practical applications for classroom, small group, and one-to-one settings.  Teachers will apply course material through a case study with an intermediate or secondary reader, developing individualized corrective plans and procedures.

    This course challenges participants to analyze different theories of learning and to determine how those theories influence instructional design and assessment.  Within the framework of learning theory, students will plan and design model technology integrated units to provide learning opportunities that integrate a variety of tools and strategies to match learning levels, interests, and needs of students and that will promote concept-based learning.

    The course will improve a teacher’s ability to evaluate and select tools for student evaluation. Focus on well rounded evaluation programs will examine alternative, performance based tools and development of testing items that assess complex order thinking. The rationale and use of standardized testing will also be discussed. Students will study current issues in assessment and develop projects related to evaluation of teaching and learning that best fit their professional objectives.

    A study of the human process of creativity and how it is nurtured. A consideration of the research on creativity with particular attention to creative processes in children. Application of methods to help remove blocks to creativity. Students will prepare a major creativity project to be used in schools.
  
  • ED 717 - Gifted Methods Instruction & Curriculum

    This course is the methods course in gifted education. It satisfies the requirement for one of the four courses needed for meeting the gifted education endorsement established by the South Dakota Board of Education. Various curricular approaches for educating the gifted will be studied including, but not limited to, the Renzulli Model, the structure of the intellect model, the Gallagher model, and the Calvin Taylor model.

    This course examines the historical development of scientific ideas from antiquity to the present and the evolution of scientific thought as an aspect of human culture. Emphasis is given to the impact of these discoveries on the era and on subsequent scientific ideas; less on the actual developments of the separate scientific disciplines. Participants study the historical perspectives of science and how science interacts with and influences personal, environmental, and societal decisions. Participants also develop an understanding of the history behind concepts studied within K-12 science classes and expand their ability to make use of historical material in their teaching practice.

Topics include creation of a demonstration classroom, engaging key stakeholders (e.g. parents, administrators, and community members), forming and facilitating study groups, peer coaching, mentoring, and curriculum review.
