The Department of Mass Communication prepares students for careers in broadcasting, journalism, public relations, photography, desktop publishing, electronic imaging, and multimedia communication. Students study the communication processes within and among groups, organizations, societies, and cultures. Within its curriculum, the Mass Communication program explores oral performance, broadcast messages, production and programming, advertising management, public relations campaigns, news reporting, and other aspects of mass communication. In addition, students are given the opportunity to gain practical experience through internships. A minor is required for Mass Communication majors.
In lieu of an exit exam, Mass Communication students are required to produce an exit portfolio during their final semester. The portfolio will be reviewed by two professors from the Mass Communication department.

Graphic Communication Emphasis - 39 semester hours
Integrated Media - 45 semester hours
Photography Emphasis - 45 semester hours
Public Relations Emphasis - 42 semester hours
Science Communication Emphasis - 44 semester hours
- Take 6 credits from the following:
- Any PSYC or SOC courses not used to satisfy General Ed
- Take 8 credits from the following:
- Any 2 lecture/lab combinations from General Education Natural Science options. May not use the same courses to satisfy General Education and this requirement.
Sports Media Emphasis - 44 semester hours

Take 3 Coaching methods courses: Elective
Take 1 of the following: Social Science Reciprocity - 3 credits
Take one course from the following prefixes. Your choice may not be used to satisfy a General Education or Major requirement, and must be from outside your major discipline: AIS/LAKL, ANTH, CMST, GEOG, HIST, POLS, PSYC, SOC
Humanities Reciprocity - 3 credits
Take one course from the following prefixes. Your choice may not be used to satisfy a General Education or Major requirement, and must be from outside your major discipline: ART, ARTH, ENGL, FREN, GER, HUM, MCOM, PHIL, RUSS, SPAN, THEA.
System Gen Ed Requirements (SGRs) - 30 semester hours
- ENGL 101

- CMST- Gen Ed - Speech (1 class) - 3 semester hours
- MATH - Gen Ed - Mathematics (1 class) - 3 semester hours
- Gen Ed - Social Science (2 classes from different subjects) - 6 semester hours
- Gen Ed - Arts & Humanities (2 classes from different subjects or a foreign language sequence) - 6 semester hours
- Gen Ed - Natural Sciences & Lab (2 classes/corresponding labs) - 6-8 semester hours
Minor and Electives required
A minor is required with this major plus electives to total 120 hours, of which 36 hours must be 300-400 level courses.
