History Major BBA.HST/BBS.HST

The history major at Black Hills State University provides a program emphasizing American History, European history, and regional history. Students majoring in history learn about past events and people, explore themes in historical eras, develop the ability to analyze and interpret historical documents and publications, apply computer technology in the field, and practice the skills of historical research and writing. History majors have career opportunities in museums, historical societies and archives, research institutions, government agencies, and they can also become certified to teach. The history faculty is prepared to help students with career options and with the choice of an appropriate minor for their particular needs.

The Bachelor of Arts degree requires students to take 4 semesters of the same foreign language.

History Electives - Take 2 additional courses from the above categories:


  • 300/400 level History courses from above   - 6 credits

Humanities Reciprocity - 3 credits


Take one course from the following prefixes. Your choice may not be used to satisfy a General Education or Major requirement, and must be from outside your major discipline: ART, ARTH, ENGL, FREN, GER, HUM, MCOM, PHIL, RUSS, SPAN, THEA.

System Gen Ed Requirements (SGRs) - 30 semester hours


  • ENGL 101
  • ENGL 201
  • SPCM - Gen Ed - Speech (1 class) - 3 semester hours
  • MATH - Gen Ed - Mathematics (1 class) - 3 semester hours
  • Gen Ed - Social Science (2 classes from different subjects) - 6 semester hours
  • Gen Ed - Arts & Humanities (2 classes from different subjects or a foreign language sequence) - 6 semester hours
  • Gen Ed - Natural Sciences & Lab (2 classes/corresponding labs) - 6-8 semester hours

Minor and Electives required


A minor is required with this major plus electives to total 120 hours, of which 36 hours must be 300-400 level courses.
