Post-Bachelor’s Teacher Ed Certification

K-12 Content Areas and 7-12 Content Areas
This academic certificate program provides an option for individuals who want to become teachers and who have baccalaureate degrees in K-12 or 7-12 content majors in which the South Dakota Board of Education certifies teachers.  This certification-only program prepares prospective teachers with the necessary pedagogical knowledge and skills to succeed as K-12 or secondary teachers.  The Black Hills State University post-bachelor certification programs are called Project SELECT and Project SECOND.

NOTE:  These certification programs are recognized by the South Dakota Department of Education and Wyoming Department of Education and meet requirements for teacher certification.  Individuals seeking certification by other state licensing agencies are advised to contact those agencies in advance of enrolling in the programs as each state agency has the authority to recognize or not recognize certification programs from other states.

Admission Requirements:

  • Completed content major in which the South Dakota Board of Education certifies teachers;
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.6;
  • Content GPA of 2.6; and

Testing Requirements:

  • Successful completion of the Praxis I Pre-Professinoal Skills Test (PPST) in reading, writing and mathematics.
  • Successful completion of the Praxis II ontent Exam in major area of preparation.
  • Successful completion of the Praxis II Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) exam during student teaching.

Procedures:

  • Apply for admission to Black Hills State University in Enrollment Services.
  • Submit official transcripts from institutions attended previously.
  • Pass the Praxis I and Praxis II exams.
  • Make application for admission to teacher education at the Field Experiences Office.
  • Take the Praxis II PLT exam during student teaching experience.
  • The Black Hills State University transcript will indicate that the student has completed the certification requirements for the chosen program.  the Field Experiences Office will grant its institutional recommendation when the student applies for state certification.

Pre-Professional Teaching Core - 18 semester hours

Professional Secondary Ed Teachign Core - 24 semester hours
