Course Numbering System

  ^ TOP

Each course carries a three-digit number. The second and third digits are used within Colleges in sequence. They indicate lab or lecture, area identification and prerequisite courses. The first digit in the number indicates the college year when the course should be taken. Courses numbered in the 100s are normally taken by freshmen, 200s by sophomores, 300s by juniors, and 400s by seniors, 500s by seniors with special approval and graduate students, 600s and 700s are by graduate students only.

Students should schedule courses during the year indicated by the course number. Unless otherwise restricted, students may take courses one year in advance or one year following their normal placement. Thus, a junior should take courses numbered in the 300s and may take courses numbered in the 200s or 400s but should not take courses numbered in the 100s.

Section numbers are “smart coded” according to South Dakota Regental Universities. Black Hills State University sections begin with a “B”.

Note: Common Course Numbering and Descriptions are identical courses at any of the SD Regental Institutions (BHSU, DSU, NSU, SDSM&T, SDSU, and USD) offering those courses. The unique courses are only offered at Black Hills State University.
