Chemistry Major B.BS.CHEM

Chemistry appeals to those students with a broad interest in science and there is an increasing demand for trained scientists who can overlap with other disciplines, such as biology, physics, mathematics, geology or environmental science. Chemistry majors prepares the student for the demands of graduate school, teaching in secondary schools and employment in industry and governmental agencies. Biotechnology and environmental technology are fast growing industries seeking well-trained scientists. Chemists who pursue further education in law, journalism, or public policy are attractive candidates for industry and government jobs.

Required Core - 33 semester hours


Select either Biochemistry or Chemistry emphasis


Biochemistry Emphasis: 26-30 hours


System Gen Ed Requirements (SGRs) - 30 semester hours


  • ENGL 101
  • ENGL 201
  • SPCM - Gen Ed - Speech (1 class) - 3 semester hours
  • MATH - Gen Ed - Mathematics (1 class) - 3 semester hours
  • Gen Ed - Social Science (2 classes from different subjects) - 6 semester hours
  • Gen Ed - Arts & Humanities (2 classes from different subjects) - 6 semester hours
  • Gen Ed - Natural Sciences & Lab (2 classes/corresponding labs) - 6-8 semester hours

Globalization Requirement


* Global Requirement:  depending on your selection, this requirement will satisfy 3 hours of either Social Science or Arts & Humanities requirements.  Take 1 course from AIS/HIST 257, ANTH 210, ARTH 211/212/251, ENGL 211/212, GEOG 210, HIST 121/122/153, HUM 100, MCOM 151, POLS 141/250.

A minor is NOT required with this major but electives are required to total 120 hours, of which 36 hours must be 300-400 level courses.
