Early Childhood, Special Education Endorsement

Endorsements


The College of Education offers courses leading to endorsements in Early Childhood/Special Education, Middle School, Pre-Kindergarten, Special Education, Math Specialist, and Science Specialist. Check with graduate studies coordinators for specific course requirements. Endorsements are not recorded on the students’ transcript. Students must apply to the South Dakota Department of Education in Pierre to add a certificate endorsement.

Requirements are as follows:


  1. A bachelor’s degree and certification endorsement in at least one of the following:
    1. elementary teacher with pre-kindergarten
    2. elementary teacher with special education
    3. secondary teacher with special education
    4. elementary teacher with kindergarten
    5. special education teacher
    6. speech and hearing clinician
  2. Having completed one of the following:
    1. an approved Master’s program in early childhood special education.
    2. five continuous years of primary experience as an early childhood special education of children ages birth through six years.
    3. fifteen semester hours of coursework meeting competencies in §24:19:02.01:12.
