  • ED 752 - Ethnography of Schooling


    CRSE Type: Unique Course
    This course explores teaching as an ethnographic enterprise in order to gain a more comprehensive understanding of schools. Through community surveys, interviewing, demographics and other field methods found in ethnography, students will explore the contexts in which schools are embedded and determine the impact of those contexts on curriculum and schooling. Students will develop an ethnographic project based on their own experience and interest in educational environments.

  • ED 754 - Professional Development Practicum in Schools


    CRSE Type: Unique Course
    This course engages graduate students in effective, supervised field-based experiences in professional development and instructional program development in their specific areas of specialization. Students participate in planning, implementing, and evaluating professional development efforts at the grade, school, district, and/or state level. Supervision is shared by BHSU graduate faculty and public school mentors in the various areas of specialization.

  • ED 756 - Reading Practicum


    CRSE Type: Unique Course
    This clinical practicum in reading is a supervised experience that allows students to apply diagnostic and remedial techniques for the development of a case study. This case study will include on-going evaluations, a program design/ plan for improvement, and data to support the growth of the struggling reader.

  • ED 759 - Advanced Issues: Leadership in K-12 Science

    This course addresses an array of professional development strategies including co-teaching, mentoring, coaching, workshops, and shared leadership. Emphasis is given to identifying needs and facilitating staff development in science content, science pedagogy, and assessment of adult learners. Participants will refine their capacity for professional leadership in school science. They will gain knowledge, skills and attitudes to support the professional growth of other teachers and to provide guidance for parents, administrators, and the broader community about issues related to the improvement of science education.

  • ED 760 - The Art of Teaching: Building Repertoires


    CRSE Type: Unique Course
    This course promotes examination of concepts that reach beyond the traditional debate between a back-to-the-basics approach versus a progressive or process approach in teaching and learning. By surveying the use of the eclectic arts of teaching (Schwab, 1971), students will be encouraged to develop a self-defined repertoire of teaching tools and an inquiry project.

    An in-field teaching experience under the supervision of a university supervisor and a mentor to place into practice what has been taught in the ESL courses.

    This course is designed to reflect the six strands of the human relations component as mandated by the South Dakota Board of Education. Students will develop expertise in listening and communicating to create a climate within the school environment that is more conducive to learning. The course is also designed to help the participants understand the community issues in education and to encourage the teachers to be more aware of ways to strengthen community involvement in the school. Another area that will be addressed is the dehumanizing impact of biases and negative stereotyping.

    Recent studies of leadership suggest that organizations and political units require strong leaders who understand and adhere to ethical standards. The future of US society may depend in part upon persons who are capable of providing ethical, as well as strong, leadership. It is necessary that leaders understand their position imposes an obligation to adhere to ethical standards in all components of leadership. These components include, but not are limited to: communication, inspiration, collaboration, facilitation, manipulation, and even coercion.

    Examines social changes throughout history as explained by classical and contemporary theorists and applies such theories to current social changes.     Surveys the field of forecasting techniques as well as traditional forecasting theory. Students will examine linear regression, statistics, trend lines, and time series analysis utilized in prediction modeling. Students will examine how to research, process, and analyze information through an understanding of research methods and the role of judgment in forecasting.

  • SLDR 770 - Visioning: Strategic Planning

    This is the capstone course for the M.S. in Strategic Leadership. The course builds on prior coursework and further develops the visioning and strategic decision-making skills necessary to effectively lead a 21st century organization. Emphasis is placed on the development and execution of strategy. Extensive case analysis is used as the primary method of instruction. The course culminates in the development of a strategic plan in which students synthesize the knowledge and experiences of the M.S. in Strategic Leadership program, including coursework, practicum, and mentoring opportunities.

    Mentoring serves as the final field experience. Designed as a learning opportunity, students are placed in a situation where they serve as a mentor in a military, business, governmental, or non-governmental organization. During this experience, the student explores ways to assess another’s strengths and challenges, evaluate using performance criteria, and provide guidance and support to improve another’s performance.

    An introduction to the entire field of education for children with exceptional needs and is required by all middle school and secondary school majors. Students will identify etiology, classification, and educational programming practices for individuals with any identified disabilities. Students will also determine which local, state, and national administrative and legislative provisions support children with these conditions. Computerized IEP forms and other productivity tools will be reviewed.

    This course serves as a general introduction to behavior modification, contingency management, and reinforcement theory. Students will develop techniques to use in observing and recording behaviors. Practice is given in applying intervention techniques to the acceleration and deceleration of behavior of groups and individuals. The student will be expected to use the Internet and library research tools for the development of research papers.
